Okay, let me rephrase that. Since we can't arrest you, would you rather take it to me or Fynn or somebody else? Hell, I'd be able to take it to the range, pretend it's mine, if you want.
"The prof suggested reincarnation," Dante offers--it's the idea that he's held onto this whole time, because if it's true, then it gives all of this some sort of structure, some sort of sense. He doesn't want it to be at random, like he and Alison have discussed; accepting some sort of supernatural influence like reincarnation is strangely comforting.
He's satisfied to see Togusa's shoulders relax slightly. It's a step in the right direction, even if he doesn't think Togusa will be happy to see them running into combat any time soon. "It is pretty unfair," he says, careful with his tone of voice. Not too pointed, as he doesn't want to turn this into any sort of argument right now, but neither is he neutral either. It would be strange for him not to have an opinion here! "You're trying to make all of these decisions but you're not even taking what we want into consideration. According to the law I'm old enough to choose to enlist in the military and fight and die for this country. I'm old enough to decide whether I want to know the truth about what I'm learning, too. And so are the rest of us. We know there's a risk of remembering something bad. But you need to have faith in us, too."
Togusa is still just a little resistant, and shakes his head. "I've- started getting evidence that maybe what I'm seeing? Other Togusa is from the future. Reincarnation working backwards?"
"I do have faith in you guys," Togusa says quietly. "Would have more faith if Prompto could go a month without going to the hospital," a weak attempt at a joke. "Somehow it just feels like you're getting it even heavier than us adults."
"I'll- try to back off." Reluctant. It's hard for him to even talk about doing so. "If. I can trust you guys to actually ask for my help when you need it. Which is what this is for," Togusa waves a hand to indicate where they are and why they're talking right now. "So okay."
Okay, now that's a much better idea. I can lend it to you to check it out. Fynn is the officer who brought me in, right? I don't know if he even knows I have a gun.
There's a ghost of a laugh on Dante's face when Togusa makes the (admittedly bad) joke about Prompto going to the hospital--it's bad, but it's also true; the guy's a little bit of a walking disaster (not that Dante's much better). But it's swept away soon enough, because they're on a serious track right now and he doesn't want to derail it.
"Maybe it seems like we're getting it worse because we're going out and doing more," Dante points out. "I remembered fighting, so I looked for someone who could help me try and see if I could trigger myself into remembering more about it. Prompto wanted to see if he could trigger some sort of flash so we took a night to try and do that. We're trying to learn more." Kind of. He could do without, honestly.
He relents a little bit with Togusa's acceptance. "Nobody's asking you to like it. But it's hard to want to talk to someone about things when you know all they're going to do is get pissed off over them."
He wants to keep Togusa in the loop. The information they've shared has been helpful, and it's nice to know he can ask him about things sometimes. But the constant repetition of how much he dislikes the memories Dante's remembering only makes him want to keep quiet about them.
Togusa sighs, and his frustration is all aimed at himself. "I'm not pissed off at you. Or Prompto, or anybody. You can't help what you're seeing. It's just getting angrier at Retrospec. But that's not helping, either, is it?" It's hard not to get angry, but there it is.
"I'll listen. I'll listen better. Remind you all that it's not you. That's what's been helping other people." Koutarou. In a way, Ardyn.
"I'm not chasing it and I'm not going to. I don't know if I can stop myself from trying to make sense of the things I do see, anyway." He's already fallen into that trap a few times. "But I won't stand in your way of trying to figure it out."
He's a good guy. Turns into a completely different person when you're talking about guns, it's interesting to watch.
But if you're sure, I can look at it. I would just disassemble it, clean it if it needs it, barrel especially, and test out the components individually. Spring, action, and so forth. I'd be able to notice any problem before you tried to put a bullet through it.
If that's what you're doing, then I'm gonna watch. If Retrospec's gonna send me a gun, I should at least know how to strip and maintain it.
[ Plus, it kind of bugs him that he knows how to do it for the Walther, but not the M1911 that he actually owns. The process is probably similar enough, but he's not about to take a chance on "probably" when it comes to firearms. ]
[ something tells him he's not going to like any of it, regardless of how much or how little of it there really is. but if it gives him something to think about other than the horrible realization that retrospec can switch his memories on and off, apparently, at will...
when togusa shows up, gabranth is quick to open the door and usher him inside. though it's only been a short time since his memories returned, he looks as though he hasn't slept in days. ]
You want anything? Coffee? [ it's the barest of courtesies, given he's already brewing a pot for himself. ]
Togusa flashes a quick look of concern before he puts it on lockdown. He's never 100% sure how to act around Gabranth, but he defaults to being more professional. "Coffee would be great, thank you."
Togusa steps inside, taking a quick look around when Gabranth isn't looking. He'll admit to being a little curious about how the Detective lives. Whether that pay raise is worth it.
Togusa drops a few folders on the kitchen counter, then looks at the labels. "When did we lose you? What's the last thing you remember? I'd guess about three weeks, because there was a pretty big incident," Togusa's hand lingers on one of the folders, "and you didn't even bat an eye. That's when I figured it out."
As far as the apartment goes, Gabranth keeps his space tidy and his decor spartan. If it weren't for the small pile of mail on the table and a jacket haphazardly tossed over a chair, one might think this was a showroom instead of a place where somebody actually lived.
His brow furrows as he goes to the cabinet to find another mug. "Last thing I remember... I was in another fight with Fynn on Retrospec." As if that's marginally useful or unique, but who knows. "After that, it was all just... Gone."
Damn if it's not a confirmation of everything people have told Togusa about making Detective; good luck having time for anything else.
Togusa frowns, and he hands over the top folder. It's also the thinnest, filled with only Togusa's papers. "Not to make you feel guilty, but Izunia's going to come up a few times. Through bad luck and timing, he's gotten the brunt of it this month."
"June 27th. The most severe incident, but also the one I have the least information on. An unidentified suspect, but known to be someone on the Retrospec platform. Assaulted a man with a sword, cut the man's hands off." Lets that hang in the air for a second before he moves on.
"Detective Matsuoka and Officer Izunia both got on a week's administrative leave for discharging their weapons. I know Officer Mako Lou was also involved, but I haven't gotten to catch up to him." The notes in the folder explain the same thing, but there is nothing official in there.
"I, personally, got in trouble when I went digging for paperwork to back this up, or maybe to identify the suspect."
Gabranth pauses only when he hears that one detail, cut the man's hands off, and he pinches the bridge of his nose. And he doesn't stop pinching it even as Togusa continues on. Of course this would happen as soon as he was put out of commission, of course it would.
"What sort of trouble?" he says as he slides the mug across the counter to Togusa, and finally begins to thumb through the folder. "With the department, or with Retrospec?" At this point, it's hard to tell which is worse.
"Department," Togusa confirms. He reaches for that coffee mug and wraps both hands around it like it's a lifeline. "Because, even better. Everybody is surprised that we've had an uptick in crime. They can see that much. But when I tried to go back and look through the records, I got push-back for trying to look into a case I wasn't involved in." Again. A pattern of behavior for Togusa that extends back further than Retrospec. "I'd recommend talking to Matsuoka for more details, then."
"But I was trying to look into a different incident, one where I took the notes myself. And I go back and look? Records are changed. Any mention of Retrospec is gone." He taps another folder. "The art museum bust a few months ago? Untouched. Even though it involved Rantanem. Retrospec is covering their tracks, not ours. But a few people filed privacy violations complaints? Completely gone."
Fine. How's about this weekend? Where should I bring it?
[ He says, as if there's actually a chance in hell of them doing this as planned. Oh well, they'll have to take a raincheck until later in the month. ]
"Nah, he got his comeuppance. He ended up brute-forcing a puzzle in here, so he fell through trap doors twenty times. He landed on James, and James punched him in the junk. I pretended not to notice. It was pretty satisfying."
[A tired sigh.]
"I got my ass kicked by a giant robot. Apparently other-Togusa fought giant cyborgs, too. So I'm having a day."
"Damn! He was punched in the nuts!? I'm so glad I have a good relationship with karma. My group managed to turn that power generator on after damn near dying. I'm trying to get all patched up now."
[Fynn can't help but chuckle some.]
"A giant robot, huh? Is that worse or better than getting electrocuted by a giant electric rat? I'm not certain. Wait...you mean your "other-self" is a bad ass cyborg killer?
