When Togusa shows up, Koutarou has just started to take down the big paper he’s been painting on from the wall, so he can put up a new, empty one. He looks over his shoulder and a corner droops down where it’s been unstuck.
“Good morning, Hitori!” He’s beaming like it’s Christmas and any other random holiday or celebration wrapped into one today.
James looks back at Togusa and nods. He already knows that, whatever comes next for him, whatever doctors his dad takes him to see, he's already putting his trust in Grell and Togusa. They're more trustworthy than just about anyone else at this point by virtue of being on Retrospec.
George takes the offered card and stares at it a moment, then back up at Togusa with a look of exhausted skepticism. "Help with what, exactly, officer?" After all, the perpetrator's already dead. Like he said himself, there's no justice to pursue in this case. What more can the police offer?
It may as well be Christmas, with this sort of a miracle happening for them. To be able to celebrate in the return of something they had taken for granted until it was gone, it's just what Togusa wants to do. Togusa grins right back, and he sets his mug down on the nearest table.
"Let me help with that," unmindful of any streaks of blue that will get on him as he reaches up to help with the paper. Might as well get the first one out of the way, so that he doesn't think about any of the others. He gets a splotch right on his hand, the first of many.
"Are we keeping this for posterity, or just making a new one?"
So. If you're okay with it getting confiscated for a few days. Literally anything we've tried to register through the Public Safety Office has gotten confiscated, but then Retrospec somehow gets their hands on it again and you get it back in the mail with a registration filled out. Doesn't matter how ridiculous it is.
I recommend the Deadeye Range's gun safety course even if you just intend to stick the thing in a closet and not use it.
Fucking christ, Retrospec. Outdone themselves this time.
So here's the thing. By all rights, it should get confiscated. The handgun that Retrospec sent me did, even though it's a regular gun model that already existed in this world, just because I didn't have the permit for it.
But it's as if Retrospec can't let us not have these things. The simplest answer is just that Maurice fills out a bogus registration and sends it back to you. I don't understand why, but it's like the 'sleepers' will stop paying attention to it at that point.
So. A shotgun. And the bullets for it are purchasable in vending machines.
Which. Can we talk about that for a minute? You missed that day at the office. I pass a vending machine for bullets. A vending machine for bullets with a clown on it. On my way in to work. I am all prepared to report it only to find another one right up the block from the department and a coworker buying stuff out of it!
Togusa finally balks at the question, and his shoulders visibly slump. "I don't know. But, days like this don't sit well with me. If there is something else I can do, I want to know about it." Like with James, this isn't Officer Togusa making the offer, but just Togusa. Even if it's outside of his official capacity.
But he should go before he overstays his welcome, so he nods to George. "I'll leave you to it." His eyes settle on James, and he gives one more serious nod. He's said all that he truly needs to. And deep down, he is grateful that James is even allowing someone to help him when he needs it. Today was the worst day of James' life, one of the worst of Togusa's. But it could have gone even worse.
There's a quick almost-laugh that crosses Togusa's face at the mental image of Ardyn trying to ice skate. Hubris, because Togusa does know he would fare no better on the ice.
"That sounds very you two," trying to cover himself, but there's still some amusement in his tone. "And it just kept progressing from then to now?" He knows, sure, but he would love to hear anything Ardyn is willing to tell him.
"Yes," he admits, and looks rather fond recalling all of this. "That one, non-committal Valentine's date turned into another. And another."
Her visiting his place, surprising her with roses. Spending time together at the beach. Their dance at the gala, which turned into them calling it dating officially.
"Eventually, that crush developed into something much more.... poignant. All the old romantic cliches, and whatnot."

...
Hang on.
[A minute later a photo of an absolutely ridiculous looking steampunk shotgun sitting on her coffee table comes through.]

Okay. Before I assume, what's the question?

Date: 2017-10-18 01:35 pm (UTC)My question is.
What the hell do I do with it?
I mean
I guess it's mine
But I can't exactly go get a gun license for my insane steampunk monstrosity of a shotgun.
Also I think it fires bullets from those new vending machines. The lightning ones.

I've been poking at it.
(It's not loaded)
And if I'm right it's...uh
High capacity?
And semi-automatic.
And all kinds of illegal.
And it shoots lightning bullets.

Just
Retrospec went from never sending me anything
To sending me a doll
And then a shotgun.
Just
What

It's a city on the bottom of the sea.
