[Togusa will receive an invitation in the mail addressed to him! There's a note for him, too.]
Dear Togusa,
I know we haven't talked much since the mission Retrospec sent us on, but I hope that you'll be able to make it to the wedding. If you can, there's a possibility of Baren participating, and I'd appreciate an extra pair of eyes on him. He might get the idea to release a flock of doves inside the temple itself.
Crazy jail. Mentally institutionalized, but with any luck, his length of stay there will be as long as he would have been in jail for. Supposedly, he is actually insane. I'm not the right person to judge that.
The good news is that he's got just about nobody to advocate for him, nobody pushing too hard to let him out.
The bad news is, well, yeah. They can't keep him forever. Which means we've got to figure out some kind of probation system so he isn't just walking the streets.
if you don't want him walking the streets then lock him up for life this isn't hard how the hell can you just say you're going to let him go after what he did or did you NOT see all the people in the hospital
If it's my damn choice, no, he doesn't see the fucking light of day again! You talked to his lawyer, his social worker? Get them to see the right course of action.
Supposedly he's insane, it might be related to something Retrospec did to him, but to me, this just means that he's not in control of it, so it makes him even more of a danger.
I'll go ahead and say, if you're looking for another set of eyes, she would be the person to try to recruit. She was handy when we were in Retrospec's basement.
But. All right. I'll be along. I guess there's no other way to test this. Tomorrow all right?
I doubt it. But at least I keep my word more or less. I won't go poking into things you don't want me to, and keep it strictly to see how the firewalls are. And if they aren't any, I could always give you some.
Togusa does, as promised, show up the next day. He's never been inside Yoon-sung's offices, and is not quiet about how impressed he is with the facilities. The downstairs security lets him in without a problem, he notes that he's here unofficially, so he didn't even need to show his badge.
The looking around at every little thing around him is helping to ease the tension he has about this process in the first place, because Togusa has zero idea of what to expect.
Maybe they'll get lucky, and he won't be able to be hacked at all?
But Dante's response here is going to be delayed. Because he's been assuming they were going to shove all of this other him into his head from the start--he's been worrying that one day he'd wake up with Ansem in his head all over again. This possibility that Togusa's been refusing to see... it's the reality he's been facing for months now.
He's taking this private now, though. This isn't something he wants to be public knowledge. And so a few minutes later, Togusa will receive Dante's response via a more private channel of communication.]
why do you think i've been worrying so much about everything that happened in his past
if i wake up one day with ansem's voice in my head, i want to be ready, i don't want to roll over like he did and let him use me to attack the people i care about
The downstairs looked a lot like most companies - people in suits doing things on computers, a couple guards, some floor staff in business casual, and so on. The building itself had been Art Deco at one point in time, and Yoon-sung had restored it to that style, even if he did make sure everything was up to code. But once Togusa came to the coders' floor, he was going to find it a mass of chaos and confusion, punctuated by a few meme lords here and there. The rooms was open layout, with the three distinct groups of workers in small clusters of desks, or equipment like desks. There were several very large screens along one set of walls and two overhead offices on either side. One was Yoon-sung's while the other was a kind of meeting slash break area. There were gaming machines attached to exercise equipment, there were a couple pinball machines, and even a small bar area that served coffee, hot chocolate or an array of snacks in Japanese or Korean print.
Yoon-sung slid open one of the glass doors to his office and waves at Togusa, clearly on the phone. No doubt he was telling Togusa to wait until he got the phone call over with.
or he is in control and he really is just that much of a terrible person i wouldn't put it past him or retrospec either way he went from being a public nuisance to being a public menace and they're thinking about letting him back out into society where he could just do it again?? no way if he actually does get let out i'm going to make sure he lands his ass immediately back in prison before he does anything to anyone else
My most heartfelt congratulations. I would be very happy to attend, especially if you're getting married on such an auspicious day. It feels like hubris to pretend that even I would be able to keep Baren under control, but I'll do my best. At least, I would be very glad to come celebrate with you on your special day.
[He does, okay? That's what he's here for. And even when he's reading Dante's response, part of which he rather expected, he'll keep those high hopes up because someone has to.]
You won't. And that's exactly why I have so much faith in the memories that we're making here, in this life. You're this Dante. You've got so many people that are important to you who are going to help you fight if that day does come.
That's...why you've been arguing so hard for leniency for Malik, isn't it? Because he had no one to help.
Then I guess this is the amount of time I've got to figure out what is really going on. If this is just Retrospec bullshit and something he actually can't control? I can't argue for letting him just walk around, even if it wasn't his 'fault' he's proven that whatever this is, he's a danger. But if it's Retrospec crap and we find a way to put a lid on it? What then?
malik... he's the person i probably could've been if i hadn't fallen in with the crowd i did instead. when it feels like nobody actually cares and you're just there to be held up as an example of how great someone else is... you get suspicious of other people. you start wondering what people want from you when they try to reach out to you because nobody bothers to deal with you otherwise, they just take what they want and sooner or later you'll either get a knife in the back or they'll just abandon you
[Are they talking about Malik's life or his own?]
i'd like to think i wouldn't have dissociated like he did and gone off the deep end but
the last thing he needs is to be thrown in jail and forgotten about
something like that, it'll just reinforce everything he already believes about the world
I get it. And I agree with you. While agreeing with the others, too.
Malik has every check box for someone to get completely fucked by the system. His personality, background, no parents, socioeconomic status, it’s almost formulaic. But the damage he did can’t be overlooked. I’ve got two people I care about a lot advising the exact opposite things for him.
So I’ll ask you the same question I did him. If this is just Retrospec’s fault, but it can’t be controlled. What then?
"You've got so many people that are important to you who are going to help you fight if that day does come."
if i wake up with ansem in my head one day, i don't know if i'll be able to control him. i could do the same thing malik did, or i could come after any of you like that fake me did in the fog. if you wouldn't give up on me, why are you willing to give up on him?
how are you ever gonna be sure you permanently put a lid on it he can't be trusted and even if he does go back to normal his normal is being an asshole anyway i still say either way he deserves to be locked up
“You know my schedule is all over the place.” The only times one can actually know exactly where he is is when he has classes, which he had yesterday but not today. “Nope, I have nothing out of the ordinary. You?”
"I- ah, might have a lunch scheduled later," Koutarou can just hear the blush on Togusa's end of the phone. "Nothing too special," and that's a minimization. After everyone's encouragements, he got up the nerve to talk to Gentiana again.
"Totally free otherwise! I'd hoped to be able to run into you." Opening the door because he would really like to see Koutarou today.
Togusa takes a second to look around the room, because there is quite a lot to look at. He is trying not to pry, but also getting distracted by everything interesting to see. There is a bright, relaxed smile on his face by the time that he spots Yoon-sung, and he raises his hand in return.
Togusa makes his way up the stairs to Yoon-sung's office, but he still patiently waits outside the door for Yoon-sung to be ready for him. "This is one hell of a setup," he has to admit. Not enough to make Togusa question his life choices, but it's still impressive.
