Togusa briefly looks very confused, to the point he even glances out the window to check if it's raining. "Not a problem, I'm happy to see you outside of hours, so to speak," he smiles politely.
"Can I get your coat?" Slightly odd, but he doesn't think too much of it.
[ There's a noticeable moment of hesitation before Lucian replies. ]
About that... it is a little inconvenient, yes. Please, do not be alarmed.
[ He puts his bag down on a table and takes the jacket off, revealing a pair of white wings folded against his back. They're thin enough to fit under the coat, thus why he's wearing it. ]
[Togusa has to lean back in his chair and think about Tim's idea a lot. What Retrospec is offering is a chance to remake yourself, if you accept what they say. But it is an affront to people who already are comfortable with who they are. Togusa can handle it. At least he thinks that he can.]
[But what if?]
Maybe that's why they're keeping tabs on us. They're behind the memories that we're regaining, or at least they can track them. But that's why we can't get rid of the application, why we can't shake the surveilance.
What if it's to keep everybody else safe from us?
We can't depend on Retrospec, but, damnit, you're right. This goes even beyond just stopping what they're doing, but undoing the damage that they're up to. If we can be changed, we can be changed back.
Okay, so we're some kind of weird and messed up Freudian experiment. Great. Are You really You when it's all said and done, the next hit late-night show.
What do you think Retrospec has the ability to do if one of us goes bonkers?
Do not be alarmed, he says. This has been a week for the record books for Togusa's sense of reality and strangeness. Floating sentient talking rabbits. Waking up only a few centimeters tall. Not to mention all of the attacks by giant spiders. But nope. Alarmed isn't the correct word for it, but he is very impolitely staring at the new strangest thing he has ever seen. "I....."
"...does it hurt?" When he can finally think again, the first thing that makes it through is a quiet concern for his friend.
[ Lucian's expression had become pinched, but he relaxes upon seeing that his friend would not respond to him with fear. ]
It does not. It is a strange phenomenon... I cannot explain it.
[ There's a moment's pause before he unfurls them, showing off more of the feathers. They appear to be similar to swan wings, pure white - yet there's a sot of geometric oddness to them. ]
Togusa immediately feels bad for staring, but it's difficult not to. They're beautiful, in a way, but it's still a hard concept to wrap his head around. Why would he suddenly have wings?
Togusa steps back, and he gestures towards the couch, then hesitates, "Or, I suppose, wherever would be most comfortable?"
This is all still terribly confusing, which means that of course Daisuke decides this is the moment to come up and see what's going on. A small white miniature schnauzer very calmly trots up and sniffs at Lucian just like he would at any other guest. Togusa has to hold back a laugh. "Ah- Lucian, this is Daisuke. Daisuke, Dr. Lucian." Maybe he should be taking tips from the dog.
I tried to check in on one of the people who went into the building with me, but couldn't get in touch. I mean, they could've moved. Just after the building, it seems weird.
[Visions of a missing 12 year-old are now dancing through Togusa's head, thanks a lot, Tim. Nope, nope, he is stopping EVERYTHING else to check on this.]
I can find his address without alerting anyone else that I'm doing it. School records are nice that way.
Just a drive-past. I can do that without involving anybody else. If I don't find him, then I'll start checking the missing person records.
He is just a kid. With any luck, Retrospec just decided to let him go, and he's still at home with his parents, and thinks horses are a made up creature again.
[ It's one of the reasons why he's sought Togusa's company, at least. ]
I can sit.
[ By angling his wings in a particular manner, they won't get in the way. ]
Ah, it is a pleasure to meet you. [ Directed towards Daisuke - perhaps not a very eager pooch, but not a hostile one either. ] You have quite the attentive companion.
Daisuke lets out a quiet 'boof' and as soon as Togusa and Lucian sit, he follows them right up onto the couch. There is a small carpet-covered block that he hops up onto, and from there bounces onto the couch. He rolls right up against Lucian's leg and rests his head on him. Togusa has to quietly chuckle as he moves into the kitchen area to start making the tea.
"Was it like what I experienced?" Togusa has to ask. Worry is starting to creep out of his voice, replaced with curiosity. "You just woke up with them?" At least, then, maybe he didn't feel the change happen.
It's about a half an hour later when Togusa's car rolls up. It's his own car, a small white sedan, not a squad car. He's still in uniform, but at least he's making some effort to be less conspicuous.
Togusa leans across to unlock the door after he parks. "Drake," Togusa nods. "Got Luke's address from his school. He's still listed as an active student." Which Togusa sounds hopeful about. "If he'd been missing school, there might have been a truancy note, but that takes time for somebody to notice. I'd still rather go check on him."
Thank God for the lack of cruiser. Not for Togusa's sake (sorry), but for Tim's; too many people would be asking him questions about being in with the Recolle police. No thanks.
He springs off the cement steps when Togusa pulls into the drive, and he doesn't seem to be as prepared as usual (he still is) with backpack, etc. Just Tim, casual, and the smartphone in his hand.
"Maybe they moved inside the city?" he poses as he drops into the seat, buckling like a good little boy. "I don't know where his house was before; we met in the park before going to Retrospec." Not that, to be honest, Tim isn't relieved. It's better to know people are safe, and yet...
There's some disappointment at the good news. He thought they may have been onto something big, a way to actual accuse Retrospec of foul play.
[ Yoon-sung knew that Togusa did not want to know the details of how and who, but he figured that he might at least liked to be kept into the loop of some things. This was going to be a simple little drop of information, but it should impact some of the theories going around. In other words, he did break into the CCTV system for a quick scan of his immediate area before checking out the area around Retrospec. Which means that the results of him not getting any image of the building from the cameras is now being sent on to Togusa.
About mid-morning an anonymous text was sent his way. The phone number can be traced back to a burner number coming from the location of several shops and small little convenience stores that see a lot of day traffic since they sit on a four way to the business district. The text itself is a simple link to a dropbox video which lasts for two inutes. It starts at the nearby streetlights, focusing on traffic, then zooming up to look at where the Retrospec building is suppose to be and showing nothing. No building. No anything to show that a building is there. ]
[ Daisuke certainly is friendly, so Lucian tries to pet him with one hand. As long as the dog is comfortable, he'll continue doing it. ]
Yes. I did try to check my back, it seems they are firmly anchored there and unremovable. As I was sleeping on my back, I doubt a person had placed them there.
Daisuke stays right where Lucian can keep petting him. He's a low-key dog, doesn't get very hyperactive, but just likes to follow people around. So he'll stay right here in his slice of doggy heaven.
Togusa puts his hands on his hips and watches the water as he has to think about his next question. These words are ridiculous, but he will ask anyway. "Have you tried them out?" He shakes his head. "This is ludicrous, but after this past week?"
[ Togusa is not the first person to have asked this question. ]
I am... not very sure.
[ It's a serious question, and would have given data, but he has his reservations. He looks thoughtful, resting one hand on his lap since Daisuke occupied the attention of his other hand and he cannot steeple his fingers. ]
I do not seem to have given the knowledge of how to fly, if it can be called thus. Flying seems to involve specific techniques that I do not have yet. I would try to fly, except that my health is not as good as before. I would not want to injure myself in the process.
