Do you mean just training, like working on dummies? Because you say the words 'fight club' and I worry you're talking about a bunch of people swinging swords at each other and that's not only dumb but REALLY illegal.
one day i'll remember to hit text tag... one day...
Assault cases can still be an issue even if the fight was consensual. At minimum, you're looking at disorderly conduct. Doubly so if you're very specifically calling it a fight club, because I think those are classified as a subversive group.
Which is really stupid because the original book was a satire. Americans.
I need to state my objections to doing this. This is exactly why I went into law enforcement instead of anything else. You're asking me to find a way to skirt around the law as it exists.
You want to learn to fight safely, the answer is to go to authorized gyms and dojos, places that fall under the various sport commissions of the state. But if you're doing things that violate their various commissions, like swinging swords at each other in a boxing gym? You're putting their own licensure at risk.
objections have been stated, noted, and filed away for further review at a later date
i'm not trying to break the law here or even skirt around it, i'm trying to do all this by the books so that ANYBODY from the network can come without freaking out they're gonna get in trouble. so if that means needing to find private space and make people sign waivers saying they're doing this at their own risk, then that's what i'll figure out
but there's no gym trainer or dojo teacher who can teach me how to use this power i've remembered
there are people remembering magic. how are they supposed to learn to control it, by setting their houses or the woods on fire?
if we do this, it's somewhere safe for everyone to learn. i got lucky, i remembered how to fight back in march so i knew what i was doing last month when we had those spiders attacking us. but what if i hadn't? what if i hadn't been practicing on my own for the past month and a half and only found out when i got jumped?
[Look, he's actually writing a bit more coherently than he usually does! Those are actual question marks! HE'S BEING SINCERE HERE??]
THAT'S why i want to do this. not just to screw around
but because we don't know what's gonna happen next or if we'll be attacked like that again. with how many of us remember fighting monsters, i don't want to take any chances
[There is a bit of a pause before Togusa responds. That's more mature than he had expected out of Dante. And it's depressing that it's falling to him to organize this. But his heart is in the right place.]
Tatsuo Kihara. He runs a Karate dojo, so he's probably less likely to get in trouble with whatever Karate organization he reports to if weapons training is happening there. And he's with us. CSI agent, not an actual cop. So he'd be more likely to bend the rules, I think.
Go to him with the same sincerity you just came to me with, and he'll probably agree to help you. Tell him he was my idea.
If you want to take this on, thank you. My last piece of advice is one that I'm giving to a lot of people, which is to make sure that it doesn't just hinge on one person. So that things don't fall apart when Retrospec decides, for whatever reason, that they're done with you, and you wake up and remember nothing.
don't worry, we've got contingencies set up. i don't plan on disappearing any time soon, but once this all gets set up other people can take it over if it comes to that
[Will Togusa notice that we? Dante wants to explain to him the secondary reasoning behind the fight practices, but in keeping with the discussion he and Chloe had at the library, he's not about to breathe a word of it over the network. Or over any other type of technology, really.]
i get that you're a cop and all but you sound more like you're a dad trying to get to the bottom of who broke the heirloom vase than whether or not something was illegal
[To say Dante's stunned wouldn't be too much of an understatement. He's wholly, thoroughly shocked by Togusa's words, both their meaning and by how simply it's written.
As if it's some obvious fact that someone would care about him. That someone would care about him less than three months after they first started talking, in a strangely comfortable way that's different than how comfortable he feels around Prompto or Ari or Vera...?
And why does that make him feel something in his heart?]
You're doing the right thing. And this could potentially help a lot of people. And I'm sorry the law is somewhat in the way of you doing this. So, I know better about your intentions.
You are helping your fellow man in the most asshole way possible.

would i ever do anything illegal
ask yourself that and there's your answer
[Dante is dumb and really illegal, after all...]

I want to ask who else you've dragged into this. But I realize that I don't actually want to know.
Just tell me it's not Prompto. He has miraculously spent a month without getting himself injured again, this is a streak I would like him to keep up.

sure we'll go with that

You're an excellent liar. And I know it.
So when I get a response like this?
What part of that last text am I wrong about?

he's fine, we just tried a few things over the weekend to see if he would remember anything
not weapon-related before you ask or try to use it to prove your point

you realize how bad a life choice that is right

besides, for as much as i'll joke about it i'm no idiot
[Hence all the question marks over this. Because Togusa doesn't seem the type to lie, but... ?????????]

Believing in people hasn't led me wrong so far.
And no, you're not stupid. You've got enough of a heart to want to do this the right way. And you're smart enough to know you can't handle it alone.

i take it back i think i like it better when you're calling me an idiot
i don't have a heart, i'm the network's resident asshole remember, that's what i'm here for
and i could've done it on my own just fine, it just wouldn't have been legal which misses the entire point
[And doesn't help with either of the points he's trying to prove here. Shit. Is this a losing battle? It feels a little bit like a losing battle.]
